About

"DAVID MIERS is reported to be in the top 10 cage fighters in Gosford. He has some serious dish washing skills and thinks that Elizabeth Bennet is hot. Although he thinks that his wife Rowena is hotter. David works in youth ministry for a great church. Likes to: speak in third person, watch and play soccer, eat food and surf the web. He has never watched Star Wars."

Is Jesus 'da bomb'!??

Yesterday we started a new Bible series with our year 7-9 G-TEAMS @ Operation 24/7. Last year we looked at Hebrews 1-4 for a term and this term we are going to finish Hebrews and look at chapter 5-13.

I've come up with a summary (at least it's a work in progress) of the book to help them keep it all in context.

1) Who is it written to? A bunch of Jewish Christians
2) What are they warned against? Going back to the old way (Judaism)
3) What are they encourage to do? Persevere in Christ
4) Why? Because Jesus is 'da Bomb!

My point is that Jesus is far superior to the old covenant, he's far superior to Moses, Angels, High Priests, Melchizedek, etc...

Question:
Do you think it's appropriate to talk about Jesus in those terms?
Can we say that 'he's the bomb'?

What do you think??

Good question, and I don't have an easy answer. On the one hand, it almost sounds a bit disrespectful for the King of Kings. On the other hand, it could be just a case of expressing a true and biblical idea using the lingo and culture of the young 'uns who you are ministering to. top

In all honesty Dave...I'm sure alot of ppl would think that it may be disrespectful...but I don't think that Jesus was a fundamentalist (please don't think that I'm dissing you or referring to you Andy M)...in my opinion...Jesus wants us to CONNECT WITH HIM...however we can do that...if a young person...or yourself as it were...can connect with Jesus by calling him 'DA BOMB!' then so be it...there are SO many different names for God and Jesus in the Bible...would it be inappropriate to use one of them because someone back then was offended by it? I guess it's the same as calling him Father when someone has a personal issue with their father...I think that it's fine...gosh, almost a blog in itself...haha...you know me and my blogs...get me on my soap box and then try to get me down...NOT POSSIBLE!! hahaha top

hey andy, i think that's the tension that i have.
    ---
i'm not suggesting that the word 'da bomb' is offensive to other people... i'm saying is it offensive to God.

i wouldn't call Jesus 'Father'... cos he isn't!

i think it's appropriate to be sensitive to the culture that we live in... but at the same time we are called to be 'COUNTER-CULTURAL'. Maybe my problem is it is bringing God down and failing to come before him in fear and trembling.

    i'm rambling.
i'll stop read this in the morning and try again top

Yeah, it could be kinda like saying "Jesus is my mate". I'm sorry, but he's not! He's your master. top

I completely agree that there has to be a level of respect there...so you're right...but at the same time I think people need to connect how they can in their walk...and I think as they continue in their walk they mature in their relationship with God and they start to see God in a different light...they express it differently...I think alot of young people don't know how to express it in such a way that they're saying God is AWESOME...He's WONDERFUL...He's MIGHTY...He's MAGNIFICENT...they dont speak in those terms...and so for them they refer to Him as their vocabulary would normally permit...I do agree with you in that for me, Jesus is not my 'mate' and He is more to me than just 'da bomb'...I can describe Him as more than that...but not all young ppl can...=D

Oh, and just to correct myself..in my last comment I think I caused some confusion in referring to God and Jesus and not specifying that when I spoke of 'Him' as the 'Father' I was talking about God not Jesus...=D

    Gosh...this was long...

    PEACE OUT! top

i agree that people will mature with their view on God and who he is and how they ought to approach him...

but... ought we teach things in such a way that might 'connect' with people where they are at... but not actually be honouring to God??? top

yesterday when I did the overview of Hebrews the final part was:

WHY??? Because Jesus is simply the BEST!

I like this better than 'da bomb...
and it also gave Row the opportunity to do a Tina Turner impersonation!!! top

hahaha...(laughing about the Tina Turner thing...)

Ummm...Yeah...I guess...I dont know...I mean, I guess we don't really know if God feels dishonoured by it...I guess it's one of those agree to disagree things...altho I'm not totally disagreeing with you...I'm just not 100% sure that God would be disappointed or perturbed by it...as I said...it's an 'agree to disagree' thing...it's been good discussion...not that I'm trying to end the convo...hahaha...but it's been good to think about it...

See you @ Flipside =D top
